Chicago Gamespace is delighted to present Time Machine Bronzeville, a rich, virtual experience that brings Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood circa 1940 to life. Created by artist Philip Mallory Jones and Alchemy Media Publishing Co., the centerpiece of Time Machine Bronzeville is a dynamic cityscape around East 47th St. and South Parkway Blvd - the heart of Bronzeville - on Chicago’s South Side. Players can explore this virtual diorama and be transported into immersive scenes to discover the sights and sounds of the Black Metropolis, as it was known, through dramatic vignettes, archival photos, media, and audio.
Philip Mallory Jones is a Chicago native, currently based in Atlanta. He is an internationally recognized artist and educator, known for a multifaceted career that spans more than fifty years, and encompasses games, film, video, and literature. Among his numerous awards are grants and fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the American Film Institute. Time Machine Bronzeville has been exhibited at the XL Film Festival, and content from the game was the subject of a 2017 exhibition organized by VGA Gallery at the Rebuild Foundation's Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative.
In addition to its Gamespace presentation, a satellite presentation of artwork from Time Machine Bronzeville is also on display at Chicago Public Library’s Bucktown-Wicker Park Branch.
